Better Management Yesterday...No Low Blood Sugars :)

Posted on Oct 15th, 2008 by Robby : Robby Barbaro Robby
Hey everyone,

Better managment simply means I did a better job of guessing how many units of insulin my body will need based upon the activity I am doing and the food I am eating.  No one day is exactly the same, so the number of units always vary a little bit.
But as you all know, my real goal is to not manage it at all and heal completely from "type 1 diabetes"! Part of that journey has been to accept what is here and now and deal with it.  So, for the time being I mange "type 1 diabetes" as best as I can.

Blogging Consistency

Posted on Oct 16th, 2008 by Robby : Robby Barbaro Robby
Hey everyone,

I am feeling pleased with my blogging consistency so far because I am meeting my need for integreity and my need to enrich life for others.  I know there aren't a lot of people reading this blog right now.  There will be more once I move the blog and start promoting it.  But even if there aren't a lot of people reading it, that's OK with me for two reasons.

1.  I'm not necessarily trying to reach the masses, although I have no oposition to doing so.  For example, I wouldn't say to an opporutnity to be on Oprah.  The point is that I get a greater sense of satisfaction from helping a few people achieve long term success, as opposed to giving millions of people tid bits of information.

2.  The blog will always be online.  So, it may not have a lot of viewers right now, but over time, I think a good number of people will see it.

TGIF!

Posted on Oct 18th, 2008 by Robby : Robby Barbaro Robby
Hey everyone,

Taylor and I had a great yoga session yesterday morning.  My yoga instructor was kind enough to give Taylor a free class and he enjoyed it.

After yoga we spotted a few fruit trees and took a few minutes to check them out.  Luckily my 1:55 class was cancelled so Taylor and I could spend some extra time on a permaculture design for my backyard.  It's not going to be anything too complicated, but I will update you all as it progresses.

Here are some pictures from yesterday:

5K Race

Posted on Oct 19th, 2008 by Robby : Robby Barbaro Robby
Hey everyone,

Taylor and I ran a 5K race yesterday.  That was my first 5K race since I ran cross country in high school which was 3+ years ago.  I forget what my PR (personal record) was in high school, but I was pleasantly surprised with my results.  The race took me 23:46.   FYI, 5 kilometers is 3.1 miles.

After the race Taylor and I went to pick persimmons.  This was the first time I had been to this farm and I quickly made friends with the owner, Ken.  Taylor and I don't really care how much work it takes to get the fruit, we just want the highest quality fruit we can possible get our hands on.  So, we got the largest ladder they had and started getting all the precious persimmons at the top of the trees. Ken, wants us to come back and clean out his trees so other people don't go on the high ladders and potentially hurt themselves.

I learned the name of a variety of persimmon I have been eating this season.  The egg shaped persimmons in my pictures are called Saijo.  Now that I know the name, I can now include it in my daily food consumption screen shots!

We purchased 109 pounds of persimmons at $.90/lb.  We also got a bunch of "rotten" aka perfectly ripe fruit for free!  I will make another post about persimmons in general in the future.

I am meticulous about cleaning and organizing my fruit.  So, as you can see in the list of activities below, we spent about an hour or so cleaning the persimmons.  I treat each and every persimmon with lots of love and appreciate the nourishment I receive from Nature.

The photo of our loot is about 95% of what we picked, because by the time the photo was taken the other 5% was in our bellies :)

Here are some pictures of us at the race, picking persimmons and the loot after.  The slide show link is in the upper right corner.

Surprise Gift

Posted on Oct 21st, 2008 by Robby : Robby Barbaro Robby
Hey everyone,

I received a surprise package in the mail yesterday!  My Auntie B is one of the most creative, lively, energetic persons I have ever met!  She is famous for throwing parties.  I'll have to blog about one of them in the future.  Here is a picture of her
Halloween card, which has nothing to do with Halloween, LOL.

http://healthyoptimist.smugmug.com/photos/399477699_JYfzF-XL.jpg

The inside says, "Good things pop up...sometimes when you lease expect it!"  The belly of the penguin actually opens up, and that is where the $20 bill was, LOL!

On Saturday, October 11th I had the chance to share some special information with my family.  My mother, aunt and grandparents all listened to a radio interview I downloaded.  It was David Blume speaking on Coast to Coast AM.  I'll share more about David Blume and his book Alcohol Can Be A Gas in the future.

Anyways, my Aunt really enjoyed the information and she expressed her gratitude in her card. The greatest gift a person can give to me, is to receive something I have to offer.  Her receiving the information so well really makes me feel inspired that our
nation is ready for a revolution!

Grateful

Posted on Oct 22nd, 2008 by Robby : Robby Barbaro Robby
Hey everyone,

I posted the blog about October 20th very late yesterday. So, there is a small window for people to view that post before this one. I think the blog titled "Surprise Gift" is pretty good, so check it out.

Yesterday was a little bit frustrating. My car battery died and the whole process of getting jumped and getting a new battery took 2.5 hours. That really isn't very long at all, but it was still frustrating. It definitely was a reminder of how much stuff  I take for granted each and every day. I am very grateful that 99% of the time when I turn the key, the car starts, that I have electricity, water, food, etc.....life is good!

Domestic (USA) Mangos!

Posted on Oct 24th, 2008 by Robby : Robby Barbaro Robby
Hey everyone,

Yesterday, I made a trip to my local organic distributor, Global Organics. I have been making purchases from them for over a year and not once have I been disappointed with the quality of produce and quality of customer service. They have always gone over the top to take care of me. Literally, I am probably their smallest customer and they still treat me like I am their largest.

I picked up 3 cases of mangos, a flat of grapes and 3 cases of roma tomatoes. As far as I know, Purity, is the first company to distribute USA grown mangos all over the country. This is very exciting news because it means the mangos are not subject to some form of heat treatment. Right now, the law states that nearly all imported mangos must be treated before entering the USA.

In the photo album below I have some pictures of the of the mangos and the boxes they come in. I also have some pictures of an imported box of mangos. The stamp that says it was treated with some form of heat is in Spanish. As you can see, there are no such stamps on the Three Flags Ranch boxes.

Fresh, I mean FRESH Lettuce!

Posted on Oct 25th, 2008 by Robby : Robby Barbaro Robby
Hey everyone,

Yesterday I went to Jessica’s Organic Farm to purchase some lettuce.  They had "ugly" heirloom tomatoes for $1.79/lb so I ended up purchasing some of those as well.  Virtually all the fruit Jessica’s sells comes from Global Organics, so I rarely buy fruit at Jessica’s because they don't have anything I can't get directly from Global Organics.

The photo gallery below demonstrates the freshness of the lettuce!  They literally pick the lettuce minutes before it is sold!  You can see one of the employees putting lettuce in a black bin, which is the same bin from which the customers select thier lettuce.

The photo gallery also as three images of a papaya tree I found at Jessica’s Organic Farm.

Click the images below and they will take you to more photos.

Kane The Plantain

Posted on Oct 26th, 2008 by Robby : Robby Barbaro Robby
Hello everyone,

Yesterday, I went to the Red Barn Flea Market to purchase some mamey sapote.  I purchased 50 pounds.  Mamey sapote is one of  my favorite fruits and I will make a blog post about it sometime in the future.

I also purchased a plantain at the market.  I am starting a plantain tutorial so people can learn how to manage plantains.  I did  not learn how to manage plantains until I went to Costa Rica and did and internship at Dr. Graham's fasting event.  Plantain is  one of the most delicious fruits I have ever had.  When you make a thick smoothie of just plantain, it tastes like peanut butter!

The plantain that we will be following has a name and it is Kane.

Click the image below at will take you to the photo gallery.

A1C Results - Monday, October 27th, 2008

Posted on Oct 28th, 2008 by Robby : Robby Barbaro Robby
Hey everyone,

Yesterday I went to my regular 3 month diabetes checkup appointment in Tampa.  My doctor is a very nice man and doesn't really ask me too many questions because every time I come in my A1C number is excellent for a diabetic.  He hasn’t asked about the specifics of my diet and I have no desire to start  up a conversation about it with him.  Most of the time we spend together is talking about our lives
and sports.

Some people may wonder why I go to the doctor in the first place.   The reason is because I need  somebody to write my prescriptions and my insurance company requires regular checkups.  Plus, I think  it's a good idea for a person with a serious illness to get regular blood work done, as long as they  approach the results through the health model, rather than the medical model.  That's a huge distinction which I will write more about in the future.

I don't really understand the whole A1C thing very well.  I don't really know how to articulate what  is in my head, but I will give a short summary for today’s post.

I want to make clear with everyone, that the reason my A1C number is so good doesn't have all that much to do with my diet.  I'm going to repeat that.  I want to make it clear to the world, I'm not saying my consistent, excellent A1C numbers are a result of my diet.  This is a fact for 2 reasons.

1.  My A1C numbers were good when I wasn't eating a clean diet.
2.  Other type 1 diabetics have great A1C numbers and most of them eat terrible diets.  My older brother is one example.  He eats  whatever he wants, drinks alcohol, etc....and has A1C numbers that are just as good as mine, if not better sometimes.

As far as I know, the A1C number simply indicates how well a person manages the balance between insulin intake, food intake and exercise.  They key is exercise.  I'm going to repeat that one too. The key to having good management as a type 1 diabetic is regular, consistent exercise and then adjusting your dosage of insulin based on that exercise.

I'll have more to say on this topic in the future, but I think I made the points I wanted to make for his post.

The picture below is the official piece of paper I get when I leave the doctors office.  Relevant comments are in the picture.  Click the image to see a larger version.
