Citrus Season in Florida, You Gotta Love It!

Posted on Mar 11th, 2008 by Robby : Robby Barbaro Robby
Hey everyone,

I did some citrus picking on Sunday.  I couldn’t help but be grateful during the entire experience for all the abundance that Nature provides.  I enjoy picking my own fruit for many reasons.  First, I believe it establishes a special relationship between myself and the food that nourishes me.  Second, food that I pick with my own hands is FRESH.  Third, this food is BEYOND ORGANIC.  I picked the fruit from properties I know don’t use chemicals on their lawn.  Fourth, picking fruit from various locations is one way in which I include variety in my diet.

I’m in search of other fruit trees as well.  Everywhere I go I just ask people if they know where fruit trees are.  Yesterday, I asked the checkout lady at Target and she said her husband would call me and tell me where I can find some mango trees.  I’ll keep you all posted!!

Here is a picture of my loot:

All my best,

Robby

That's Awesome Robby!!!
I hope to do the same in LA… but do you have a ladder… how to you get the top oranges?
I'm starting to leave notes at people's front door when they have a large orange tree… is that the best way to do it? How would you recommend approaching them…
thanks for the advice since i know you're a pro :)

Hey Victoire,

I use a fruit picker which reaches really really high, not need for a ladder :)

I think leaving notes is a great idea!!!  I usually go on weekends and talk to them.  I tell them how beautiful their tree is and I ask if I can pick from it.  99% of the time the people are very happy to see the fruit used rather than wasted and tell me to take all that I care for.
