I bike for transportation and I like to get places pretty quickly. So, I spend a lot of time out of the saddle and my heart rate gets pretty high during general commuting. I biked 12 miles yesterday, for a total of 1:45 minutes and the HR monitor said I burned 850 calories. I bike at least 7 miles every day and usually more.

I did some sprints in the football stadium in the morning. That took 50 min, including all the rest and burned 527 calories. In the afternoon, I played 3 pickup basketball games which lasted 1:10 minutes and burned 673 calories. That is a total of 2050 calories burned through physical activity.

Click the image to see a larger version.

Food Consumption for February 12th, 2009

Click here to see the February Food Consumption Gallery

I would like to share a poem from Kelly Bryson's book, Don't Be Nice, Be Real. our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God; your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone; and as we let our own light shine we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
-- Nelson Mandela quoting A Return to Love
by Marianne Williamson

I hope you all have a great day,

Robby

Tags:
Produce Inventory - February 9th, 2009 http://robertbarbaro.gaia.com Robby tag:gaia.com,2009:Gaia-256010 Wed, 11 Feb 2009 04:32:34 GMT http://robertbarbaro.gaia.com/blog/2009/2/produce_inventory_-_february_9th_2009

Hey everyone,

I have created my second video. I just wish I could have somebody follow me around 24/7 with a video camera and then throw the good stuff up on YouTube, LOL

Anyways, I will try to share my experiences/thoughts in regards to social situations with a host of posts on the topic. I think it is most important to point out that what I have to share comes from a place of principles and having a certain mindset, which I am learning through my NVC studies. Succeeding in social situations has more to do with what’s going on in my head, than the actual words that come out of my mouth. It’s about where my consciousness is during the conversation. If it’s not on feelings and needs, I have missed the boat.

So, it’s all about being present with my own feelings and needs first, then the feelings and needs of the people involved.

Not only is every social situation unique, but each conversation at that specific party or what ever is different. So, back to principles which work in a dynamic universe.

Specific tip: In my experience 99% of the people inquiring about my lifestyle are not really interested in learning, they are interested in making sure what they are doing is OK.

There is a whole host of feelings they could be feeling and they are most likely needing to know that they are still respected. Or their need for inclusion might be threatened by me simply living a different lifestyle then them. There is a whole host of possibilities, the point is that if I have my consciousness on what they might be feeling and needing and my desire is to connect with them, then social situations become fun, just like they should be:) It is also, crucial for me to remember that I can’t cause anybody to be happy or sad or mad, I can only stimulate things in them.

Well, that’s all I got for today. It's hard for me to put into words how life transforming Non-Violent Communication has been for me, in regards to my own internal dialog as well as my relationships with others

I have used it a lot in every day situations, with other people, but the greatest transformation has occurred in my dialog with myself. I have a long ways to go. Just like health, there is no "destination" in regards to communication. I can always improve and seek better self-awareness.

Today I want to share a little bit about perfecting selfishness. NVC has helped me to understand that I am a Human with feelings and needs and that my needs are actually a gift to others. I'm not needy, I'm needful. If people didn't have needs then life would be pretty boring because we wouldn't be able to contribute to each others well being. That's the "good stuff" I'll write a post about the "good stuff" in the futre.

In Chapter 2, Kelly talks about perfecting our selfishness.

"Here are some mottoes to help you perfect your selfishness:

Me first and only, in ever situation, at all times.

Ask for 100% of what you want 100% of the time and be prepared to empathize with any response

Never listen to one more word than you want to hear from anyone

You never have to answer anyone's questions, because you are not on trial

Trust that all your needs are gifts to other people

Present your needs as if you were Santa Clause passing out gifts "Ho, ho, ho, you lucky dog, you get to give me a massage, if you'd like."

Develop the willingness to let people you love suffer (not to be confused with making them suffer).

Never let anyone get his/her needs met at your expense. To do so is violence to both of you.

Never do anything to prevent someone from freaking out (except babies under 15 months)

Never give anyone the power to make you give in or rebel."

I will continue to share gems from this book as I go through it and share how it has affected my life.

Kelly Bryson's website is LanguageOfCompassion.com

Some questions Kelly has answered about intimate relationships:
Conscious Loving Advice Column

All my best,

Robby

Tags:
1 Exam Left! http://robertbarbaro.gaia.com Robby tag:gaia.com,2008:Gaia-241557 Sun, 14 Dec 2008 15:48:26 GMT http://robertbarbaro.gaia.com/blog/2008/12/1_exam_left
Hey everyone,

I only have one more exam left, then the semester will have officially ended! Instead of just being "absent" for random periods of time, I will announce my lack of blogging ahead of time.

I have a clear intention of blogging every day, 365 days a year. Some days will be much shorter than others, but none the less, I want to make a post every day. It's not working out very well right now. It' all good though, it will happen. I just need to learn to be patient with myself.

So, I probably won't have a blog post with updated screen shots until December 12th.

Hopefully this will prevent people from coming here and seeing that it isn't updated. What I really need to do is create crystal clear tutorials on how to use RSS feeds, then you all can have my blog come to you instead of checking all the time.

All my best,

Robby

Tags:
Two New Posts & Link to November Gallery http://robertbarbaro.gaia.com Robby tag:gaia.com,2008:Gaia-237504 Fri, 28 Nov 2008 17:14:22 GMT http://robertbarbaro.gaia.com/blog/2008/11/two_new_posts_and_link_to_november_gallery

Hey everyone,

I apologize to all those people who come here regularly looking for a new post. The first was with my mothers parents. We went to my grandparent’s favorite restaurant. I called the restaurant a few days before. Here is a basic outline of the conversation:
Robby: Hi, my family has a reservation for 6 people. My doctor has me on a special program for healing from diabetes, so I will be bringing my own food, but I am happy to pay a fee for taking up a seat in your restaurant.

Women: Ok, so you have a reservation for 6 with only 5 people eating?

Robby: That’s right.

Women: Does anything needed to be heated up?

Robby: No

Women: I’m sure you’re going to be drinking something, right?

Robby: Ahhhhh, not really….just water. But again, I’m happy to pay a fee for taking up a seat in your restaurant.

Women: (not sounding all that happy) That’s no problem we will see you Wednesday.

Robby: Thanks, have a great day.

I wish I had taken more pictures, but I brought my food in two glass bowls. I prepared the strawberries, tomatoes, and lettuce before we left my house. I brought the food in a nice black re-usable grocery bag. I think it is important not to bring the food in a see through bag or bring it in a plastic bag. That does not look good when you’re waling into a high end restaurant and wearing a suit. The goal is to look like your walking with a gift or something. People do that all the time, so it’s no big deal.

In the bag I had my two large glass bowls full of my food and tongs. So, I asked the waiter for an empty plate and simply kept on filling up my plate using the tongs. I just put the plate on my lap and kept on loading it up.

Here is the best part though. Without going into too much detail, basically the majority of the conversation throughout the evening was about politics and money. Well, I sat in silence most of the time and then at the end I said a lot of stuff. The waiter was walking by and stopped dead in his tracks and listened to what I was saying about the concept of saving money vs. having a good credit rating. He said, “He’s right. I did a lot of research……” I forget exactly what he said, but the point is he stopped dead in his tracks to share his opinion when nobody at our table even asked him. Then the last thing he said before he walked away was. “He’s smart. I commend him.”

I wonder if he put it together...….the only person at the table eating health foods was the one who said some fairly intelligent stuff about money. LOL

High Fives,

Robby

Tags:
Monday & Tuesday, November 17 & 18, 2008 http://robertbarbaro.gaia.com Robby tag:gaia.com,2008:Gaia-235450 Thu, 20 Nov 2008 01:55:50 GMT http://robertbarbaro.gaia.com/blog/2008/11/monday_and_tuesday_november_17_and_18_2008
Hey everyone,

I have so much stuff in my head that I want to write on this blog. I feel really disappointed when I think about the lack of writing I have been doing. It's all good though. I'll get it out sooner than later. Right now I'm just taking care of higher priority items.

"Robby, what happened to yoga in the mornings?"

Nobody actually asked me that question, but I'm going to answer it. I started writing a long answer a few days ago and realized that what I was writing needs to separated into different posts. So, in short, I need rest more than I need the yoga. I was waking up to an alarm clock to make it work with my class schedule. I'll get back into yoga sooner or later because it is something I know will improve my life immensely.

My exercise lately has consisted of basketballs games, running and stretching at random times throughout the day. A few minutes here and there ads up and I can feel a difference.

Food consumption for Monday, November 17th, 2008
Click the image to see a larger version
<div class="asset_container" style="float: none;
